1893 Assay Commission Medal. MS65 Brown Uncertified. Julian AC-37, R.5. Copper, 33.6 mm., 322.5 grains. The obverse is similar to the design used in 1890. The central motif, a portrait of President Benjamin Harrison facing left, is on a slightly raised field, but with no identification of the subject. Presumably, by this time everyone was familiar with the President's likeness. The reverse has a seated figure of Justice holding scales, the Great Seal at the lower left, and the facade of the Philadelphia Mint at the lower right. The legend is FIDEM REIPUBLICAE UT SERVEM, which is translated to "So that I may be loyal to and subject to the Government."
Examples are known in silver, copper, and aluminum, with the silver pieces struck first. A die crack then appeared on copper and aluminum examples. This crack begins on the lapel and follows the lower edge of the bust to the shoulder, turning upward through the right field to the first T of STATES. This example is satiny with olive and chestnut-brown color, and hints of faded mint red on the reverse. This piece was described by Bowers as "Matte Proof-65."
Ex: Salisbury and Woods Collections (Bowers and Merena, 9/1994), lot 2247.
