1909-S<$20> MS65 PCGS. The 1909-S is an unheralded conditional rarity within the Saint-Gaudens double eagle series. The mintage of more than 2.7 million pieces, combined with its distance from Roosevelt's gold recall, ensures that a quantity of Uncirculated examples have survived. However, these were indifferently stored, since they were regarded strictly as bullion by their owners, which tended to be foreign banks. By the time the numismatic value of the 1909-S had emerged, few remained in Gem condition. This lustrous and moderately abraded example is crisply struck and has reasonable eye appeal.
