1893 25C Isabella Quarter PR65 NGC. The Isabella
1893 25C Isabella Quarter PR65 NGC. The Isabella quarter is rarely encountered as an unquestioned proof striking. Records indicate that only 103 proofs were struck. The proofs were the first hundred strikes from the die, to be eventually followed by the symbolic 400th, 1492nd, and 1892nd coins struck, for a total of 103 pieces. While specific diagnostics are lacking for this issue, this piece, as with all genuine proofs, shows remarkable strength of detail. The centers are very sharply defined with especially sharp detailing on Queen Isabella's hair, the ruffled collar, the brocaded or embroidered garment, the lappet of her snood, the folds in the spinner's sleeve, the locks of her hair, the twists in her yarn, and the continuous line from distaff to spindle even where it crosses her thigh. The fields are evenly and deeply mirrored on each side. Close examination of the fields show light flow lines, indicating that this was likely one of the later proofs struck. Golden-rose toning is seen over each side with lilac patina intermixed. The only pedigree identifiers worthy of mention are two tiny planchet flakes in the fields in a line with the C in AMERICA in the lower obverse field. One of the finest examples known of this important commemorative rarity. Population: 4 in 65, 2 finer (2/05).
