1893<25C> Isabella Quarter PR65 NGC. Only 103 proof examples were struck utilizing the Isabella Quarter design. Afterward, the same dies were apparently used to strike an undetermined number of prooflike business strikes. Determination of an Isabella Quarter's status is one of the trickiest questions in the entire 144-piece commemorative series, as no die characteristics are known. While the phrase "It carries its own credentials" may have been overused in the past, it is nevertheless true with this coin. It simply cannot be anything other than a proof. The fields are deeply mirrored on each side, and the striking details are brought up on this piece unlike any business strike. We have seen proofs in the past that had lint marks on the surfaces from the dies having been wiped by a cloth prior to striking and traces of lint adhering to the die and thus transferring to the struck coin. This piece is free from lint marks. In fact, it is virtually free from any mint-made or post-minting defects. There is a tiny contact mark on Queen Isabella's cheek that can be used as a pedigree identifiers, but this does not detract from the overall eye appeal of this important proof. The obverse has rich crimson-red and cobalt-blue toning overall in a slightly variegated fashion. The reverse, however, is much deeper in hue with a predominate blue-gray and golden appearance on that side. Census: 6 in 65, 2 finer (11/05).
