Ultimate quality for this date, there are only a few graded for the "Ultra Cameo" contrast, and collectors should realize that most 1893 issues (not only the rare Proof gold issues, but the Proof silver coins as well) while struck with traditional "cameo frost" rarely come this "ultra." Only the first few coins off of brand new dies ever show a frosted eagle and Liberty with such splendor. This coin may well be the first coin off of such dies, since its depth of frost is little short of amazing! It is very likely that the combined population of Gem Proofs is a small fraction of the number from the original mintage of 106, and the stated grading census must be modified by the reality of multiple submissions of coins between the services. Essentially pristine surfaces, aside from some very microscopic hairlines, and identifiable at once by the strong contrast between the "orange peel" mirror fields and heavily frosted devices. If you demand beauty and ultimate quality, then take a look at this 1893. (NGC holder 1937983-001.)
