A few dozen of these specimens qualify as Gems by today's standards and, true to the high production standards employed during the mid 1890s, coins with Cameo or even more desirable Ultra Cameo contrast are more the rule than the exception. However, towering above these nicer specimens is the near-perfect Proof 66 offered here. The peerless, glassy golden surfaces offer stark field-to-device contrast and must look almost precisely as they did more than a century ago.

Traces of repunching on 893; date first entered to left of final position. Die file marks at tops and bottoms of white stripes; those in rightmost one nearly fill it and slant up to right and down to right. Only 106 made; rarer than this mintage figure suggests. Akers has estimated that 50-60% survive (perhaps 53 to 64 specimens in all), some impaired. NGC #1937983-001.
