Cameo frost is seamless throughout the devices, which also benefit from a needle-sharp strike. Preparation of the obverse die for proof strikings effaced the lowest relief portions of Liberty's neck curls, as made. 55 proofs were struck in 1893, but only a portion of that number has survived unimpaired. PCGS has certified a total of eight pieces across all grades, including one lightly circulated PR55 example. The high face value of proof gold eagles encouraged their owners to simply spend the coins whenever money was tight, until significant numismatic premiums emerged during the 1940s.
