1892-S$1> MS64 PCGS. The 1892-S was produced to the tune of 1,200,000 business strikes. Based on the fact that most of the known population consists of examples in various states of wear, we must assume that many if not most of these were apparently placed into circulation within a decade or two after striking. Of the nearly 3,300 specimens certified by PCGS and NGC combined, fully 3,200 are in circulated grades! The vast majority of these are in the XF to AU grade ranges, and are readily available today.
It is interesting to note that the '92-S was not recognized as a rarity in Mint State until after the San Francisco Mint dispersals from storage in the 1940s and 1950s yielded no bags of this date. It was also absent from the millions of Morgan dollars paid out by the Treasury during the 1962-1964 releases from government vaults. David Bowers, in his Silver Dollars and Trade Dollars of the United States, gives population estimates of the 1892-S Morgan in Uncirculated grades: MS60 to MS62, 75 to 150 coins exist; MS63, 25 to 50 pieces; near-Gem, 10 to 20 examples; and MS65 or better, 25 to 50 specimens. The PCGS/NGC data indicate somewhat fewer extant Mint State examples: nearly 50 coins grading MS60 to MS62, about 15 pieces each in MS63 and MS64, and nearly 20 in full Gem and finer.
The near-Gem specimen presented in the current lot displays pleasing luster and whispers of tan-gold patina imbued with occasional accents of subtle sky-blue. The design elements are well impressed, and include nearly full definition in the hair over Liberty's ear and on the eagle's breast feathers. A few grade-defining marks on Liberty's face and neck are well within the parameters of the MS64 grade designation. An overall attractive coin that is found only infrequently in this level of preservation.
