1892-S S$1 MS62 PCGS. In grades below the AU leve
1892-S<S$1> MS62 PCGS. In grades below the AU level of preservation, the 1892-S is not a particularly difficult issue to locate despite a relatively limited mintage of 1.2 million pieces. An accurately graded AU will, however, set collectors back a decent amount of money, and Mint State examples are rare. Writing in 1993, Bowers stated that perhaps 75-150 coins are extant at the BU (MS60-62) grade level, along with an additional 25-50 examples in MS63, 10-20 coins in MS64, and 25-50 examples at or above the MS65 level of preservation. As with virtually all Uncirculated '92-S Dollars, the present example is well struck with no areas of bothersome incompleteness of detail. Although a significant rarity in all Mint State grades, this issue is not plagued by excessive bagmarks, and this MS62 representative is relatively smooth for the grade. There is, however, a small mark on the reverse behind the eagle's head. The luster is suitably frosty, and both sides are white and completely untoned. A coin that should see spirited bidding among Morgan Dollar specialists.
From The Milwaukee Shore Collection.
