1892-S<$5> MS63 PCGS. The San Francisco Mint produced no half eagles from 1889 to 1891. When coinage resumed in this year, most examples entered the channels of commerce, and today examples are heavily circulated, for the most part. According to the Garrett-Guth gold Encyclopedia, "Choice examples are also very rare." This is such a piece, an enticing example of this late 19th century S-mint issue, with bold orange-gold coloration and a premium appearance. Minuscule undistracting ticks and abrasions confirm the grade, but the eye appeal is high. Population: 18 in 63, 5 finer (9/06).
