1892-S<$5> MS63 NGC. It is worthwhile to remember that the 1892-S half eagle is an elusive issue that was produced at a time when few, if any, collectors aside from the legendary John M. Clapp had an interest in mintmarked coins. It was the following year, 1893, when Augustus G. Heaton published A Treatise on Coinage of the United States Branch Mints, listing "causes of attractiveness" of various mintmarked issues. The present example boasts pretty orange-gold surfaces with a few grade-consistent abrasions. A scrape on Liberty's chin is noted, and a small dark toning spot near an olive berry on the reverse. NGC has graded five coins finer (9/06).
