1892$1> PR68 Cameo PCGS. The mintage of proof Morgan dollars was markedly higher in 1892 than in the immediate years both prior and after, perhaps partly due to the Columbian Exposition that was originally scheduled for that year. The higher mintage is also explained in part by the introduction of the Barber dime, quarter, and half dollar during this year. Along with the new design change came an increased interest in collection, and this was followed a year later by Heaton's study of mintmarked coinage, also contributing to the rise in popularity of the numismatic hobby. Many of the 1892 proofs suffered from indifferent striking quality overall, with a number of coins lacking complete highpoint definition. Such was not the case with the currently offered Superb Gem, however, which appears to be fully struck.
This is an impeccable cameo proof that displays a glassy, untoned appearance, with none of the often-seen weakness on the hair curls over Liberty's ear. The contrast between fields and devices is unmistakable, and the fragile fields have survived hairline-free and undisturbed by even the slightest evidence of contact. It is essentially untoned on the obverse, but the reverse is beginning to show hints of golden toning on some of the peripheral devices.
Just two examples of this issue have been graded as PR68 Cameo by PCGS, with only a single finer PR68 Deep Cameo example certified by the same service (2/06).
