1892-O/O<10C> MS66 PCGS. Despite a substantial mintage, most survivors are in lower grades through MS64 at best. Gem quality or finer examples are seldom encountered. In fact, this is only the fourth time we have handled an example better than MS65 in the past 12 years. This lovely example is from a late state of the dies, especially the obverse die, with peripheral die rust and a die crack through Liberty's bust truncation. This is variety number 102 in the David Lawrence reference, with the mintmark repunched. The lower curve of the original mintmark is visible inside the secondary mintmark. In fact, it almost has the appearance of an O punched over a smaller O, perhaps from a punch later used for the 1905 Micro O variety. This is a sharply struck example with full details on both sides. Pristine surfaces have pale gray toning with peripheral iridescence, incorporating attractive greenish-gold, pale blue, and russet tones. Population: 5 in 66, 1 finer (11/05).
From The Collection of Dr. Steven L. Duckor.
