<B>1892-O 50C Micro O MS62 NGC.</B></I> This rare variety is the key date to the Barber half series, one that has been known ever since Augustus W. Heaton published his seminal <I>Mint Marks: A Treatise on the Coinage of the United States Branch Mints.</B></I> That work changed forever the face (and the reverse) of U.S. numismatics, as it led collectors to begin examining their coins for the marks from the various mints. The 1892-O Micro O was produced when a die-engraver used a mintmark punch for a quarter rather than a half dollar. The mintmark is much thicker on its right side than on its left, a diagnostic, and a second one is the always-present die crack that runs from the bottom of the date numerals to the dentils beneath star 1. Several Mint State examples are known, undoubtedly due to its early discovery. This piece offers lustrous pearl-gray and amber-gold fields with a couple of stray reeding marks on Liberty's cheek and neck.
