1892-O$1 MS65 PCGS. The 1892-O is about as available in circulated and lower grade Uncirculated condition as one would expect for a coin with a mintage of 2.7 million pieces. To say that only 93 Gems are available with the PCGS designation is certainly true, but what any Morgan dollar collector wants to know of this issue is what degree of fullness (or softness) does the coin display? The 1890-1892 New Orleans dollars are notorious for weak strikes, and we have only seen a handful of coins that we would consider close to fully brought up. This piece is certainly above average. There is, though, some softness over the ear of Liberty, but it lacks the usual mushiness associated with this issue. The eagle's feathers on the reverse are approximately half present, and some striking softness is noted on the eagle's legs. Brilliant throughout, the surfaces are exceptionally clean and display the thick, satin-like mint frost that is normally associated with this date.
From The Dr. Volker Dube Collection. Lot:7264
