1892-CC $20 MS61 PCGS. Winter 1-A, the only known dies. Solidly graded at the BU level, this lovely example is awash in dominant orange-gold color. Delicate powder-blue shadings cling to the denticles around the obverse periphery, and swirling mint frost is seen throughout. The bold strike is free of criticism, as are the surfaces (which are relatively free of sizeable distractions for the assigned grade). Once considered to be a more significant rarity, the 1892-CC (27,265 pieces produced) is now among the more plentiful CC-mint Double Eagles in an absolute sense. Of course, with just 70-80 coins extant in Mint State, the present survivor is anything but common when viewed in the wider context of U.S. numismatics. An attractive survivor of an issue that is known for beautiful color and luster quality. From the Ashland City Collection.
