1892-CC<$20> AU53 NGC. This is a scarce date from a mintage of just 27,265 coins. It is particularly elusive in Mint State grades, and example such as this AU grade piece always find a steady and ready marketplace. By this time, the Comstock Lode was nearly played out, with little new metal finding its way out of the ground. Obviously, the disappearance of the precious metal supply also meant the end of the Mint in Carson City, and the following year it would meet its fate. According to Rusty Goe: "A positive factor in Carson City's quest for survival was the continued heavy export demand for gold coins facing the Treasury. Though the Carson Mint's 1892 output of gold coins was only 3% of the total exported from the U.S. that year, treasury officials would take as much as they could get from whatever source could supply it."
This is a lovely AU example, even though it is lower on the numerical scale. The surfaces are fully brilliant and highly lustrous with reflective fields, and this piece presents exceptional eye appeal for the grade. Aside from a shallow scrape on Liberty's jaw, there are few blemishes of any type.
From The Wyoming Collection.
