1892-CC $10 MS64 NGC. The mintage of this issue was 40,000 coins, making it the second largest production of any eagle from the Carson City Mint. Like many issues from Carson City and other mints, the survival rate is ultimately more important than the initial mintage. Nearly all surviving examples of this issue are circulated, indicating that these pieces must have been released into commerce at the time they were produced, although Rusty Goe reported that perhaps 95% of the mintage was exported. This seems unlikely, as many such coins would have been returned to American collectors in recent years.
Consider the combined populations of NGC and PCGS, with a total of 675 examples certified, but only 52 of those in MS60 or finer grades. This example is tied for the finest certified, with just five MS64 examples graded by both of these companies combined. Only two others have been certified as MS63, both by PCGS, and the balance are in still lower grades. According to Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth, the average certified grade of this issue is just AU50, with just 7% of the population achieving Mint State grades. For comparison purposes, they note that more than half of all certified 1891-CC eagles grade MS60 or finer.
This impressive piece, with its highly lustrous and frosty yellow-gold surfaces, has exceptional aesthetic appeal. The surfaces approach perfection with only the slightest blemishes on either side. The upper portion of the reverse shows slight doubling, especially at the tops of the letters in the motto. Census: 3 in 64, 0 finer (1/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
