1892 50C Columbian PR66 PCGS.
1892 50C Columbian PR66 PCGS. Designed by Olin Lewis Warner, the obverse of the Columbian Half Dollar was engraved by Charles E. Barber, while George T. Morgan executed the reverse. Authorized by the Act of August 5, 1892, funds from the sale of this issue were slated to support the May 1 - October 30, 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. The first 100 coins produced were proofs, as well as the 400th, 1,492nd, and 1,892nd coins that emerged from the press. This brought the total proof production to only 103 examples, and Breen states that precious few of these are still identifiable as specimen strikings. The most easily identifiable feature of this issue is the extraordinary sharpness of strike in the center of the reverse. Whereas business strikes of this type are often weak in that area, this coin exhibits razor sharp definition over the rigging and planks on the Santa Maria. The denticles are also crisp, and the fields reveal deep reflectivity at most angles with some die polish lines (as produced) that are discernible under a loupe. Both sides have toned in rich gunmetal-blue toning with whispers of lilac and crimson evident beneath. Expectantly well preserved for the grade, even close examination with a loupe fails to reveal any mentionable pedigree markers. We anticipate that this important first-year Commemorative will see spirited bidding when it appears at auction. Population: 4 in 66, 1 finer (10/03). Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
