1892 50C Columbian PR66 NGC. Per the Swiatek-Breen reference, 103 proof 1892 Columbian halves were struck on January 3, 1893. These included the first 100 pieces struck, plus the numbers 400, 1492, and 1892. The first proof coin was sold to Remington typewriter for the then-unprecedented amount of $10,000 to provide publicity for Remington and the Columbian Exposition. Although the 1892 Columbian is one of the most common commemoratives, due to a mintage of 950,000 pieces, the proofs are coveted rarities. They can be distinguished from business strikes by the sharpness on the rigging, waves, and denticles. This impressive Premium Gem has almond-gold toning and a hint of cameo frost on the portrait of Columbus. Census: 2 in 66, 1 finer (4/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
