1892 50C Columbian PR65 NGC.
1892 50C Columbian PR65 NGC.<p>Designed by Olin Lewis Warner, the obverse of the Columbian Half Dollar was engraved by Charles E. Barber, while George T. Morgan executed the reverse. Authorized by the Act of August 5, 1892, funds from the sale of this issue were slated to support the May 1 - October 30, 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. The first 100 coins produced were proofs, as well as the 400th, 1,492nd, and 1,892nd coins that emerged from the press. This brought the total proof delivery to only 103 examples, and Breen states that precious few of these are still identifiable as specimen strikings. This is the first proof Columbian Half Dollar that we have offered this year. The most easily identifiable feature of this issue is the extraordinary sharpness of strike in the center of the reverse. Whereas business strikes of this type are often weak in that area, this coin exhibits razor sharp definition over the rigging and planks on the Santa Maria. The denticles are also crisp, and the fields reveal pleasing reflectivity at most angles with some die polish lines (as produced) that are discernible under a loupe. Both sides have toned in rich antique-copper toning with whispers of lilac, electric-blue, and orange-gold hues evident beneath. Expectantly well preserved for the grade, a reverse lintmark (also as struck) in the field between the hull of the ship and the Eastern Hemisphere is the only worthwhile pedigree marker. We anticipate that this important first-year Commemorative will see spirited bidding when it appears at auction. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. Sometimes eBay Premier live bid software cannot keep up with that pace, so we strongly recommend that you place a realistic proxy bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Premier carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions.
