1892 50C Columbian PR65 NGC. Designed by Olin Lewis Wa 1892 50C Columbian PR65 NGC. Designed by Olin Lewis Warner, the obverse of the Columbian Half Dollar was engraved by Charles E. Barber, while George T. Morgan executed the reverse. Authorized by the Act of August 5, 1892, funds from the sale of this issue were slated to support the May 1 - October 30, 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. The first 100 coins produced were proofs, as well as the 400th, 1,492nd, and 1,892nd coins that emerged from the press. This brought the total proof delivery to only 103 examples, and Breen states that precious few of these are still identifiable as specimen strikings.
This is the first proof Columbian Half Dollar that we have offered this year. The most easily identifiable feature of this issue is the extraordinary sharpness of strike in the center of the reverse. Whereas business strikes of this type are often weak in that area, this coin exhibits razor sharp definition over the rigging and planks on the Santa Maria. The denticles are also crisp, and the fields reveal pleasing reflectivity at most angles with some die polish lines (as produced) that are discernible under a loupe. Both sides have toned in rich antique-copper toning with whispers of lilac, electric-blue, and orange-gold hues evident beneath. Expectantly well preserved for the grade, a reverse lintmark (also as struck) in the field between the hull of the ship and the Eastern Hemisphere is the only worthwhile pedigree marker. We anticipate that this important first-year Commemorative will see spirited bidding when it appears at auction.

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid. This lot is being auctioned in conjunction with a live floor auction by Heritage Galleries & Auctioneers. All final auction and invoice information will be supplied by Heritage Galleries & Auctioneers, and all other information should be considered preliminary. Lot:10572
