In fact, this date is quite elusive with the total population estimated to be about 20 or 25 coins. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth had this to say: "Despite a higher mintage than the 1891 issue, the 1892 half eagle is just as rare in proof. There are just 20 to 30 coins known, including those in museums and tightly held collections. Proof gold coins of this era can never be reliably located for purchase. It can sometimes be several years before an example is offered for sale. The higher denomination gold coins also become much more difficult to find in Choice condition. Many entered circulated or were mishandled."
Our notes on proof gold coins indicate that this piece is among the finest known. The Smithsonian Institution has two different examples, both graded PR64 Deep Cameo. The Walter H. Childs Collection specimen, purchased directly from the Mint and sold in 1999, is considered the finest known piece and it carries a grade similar to this specimen. The Eliasberg and Trompeter collections each contained Gem quality proofs, while Harry Bass had a coin that was graded PR63 in 1999. The Garrett, Pittman, and Carter collections each had Choice Proof examples.
This is a remarkable Cameo proof, possibly one of the finest known, with deeply mirrored yellow-gold surfaces. The devices on both sides exhibit brilliant yellow-gold luster in full contrast to the reflective fields. The surfaces are pristine, with no blemishes to serve as pedigree markers. NGC has certified exactly one finer coin, a PR67 Ultra Cameo piece.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
