1892 25C PR67 Ultra Cameo NGC. The fact
1892<25C> PR67 Ultra Cameo NGC. Type Two Reverse. The fact that we have a Superb Gem Cameo quarter from this year reinforces the popularity of this initial year of issue for the Charles Barber design. Barber's design may have lacked the artistic accomplishment of the previous Seated Liberty design that was based on Christian Gobrecht's dollars from the 1830s, and it certainly was not as inspired as Hermon MacNeil's Standing Liberty design that followed in 1916. However, as Chief Engraver Charles Barber mastered two elements of his position in the Mint. One, he is unequalled in Neoclassical design elements. One may argue the value of this, but in late 19th century America, Neoclassicism was seen throughout the land on public buildings, in works of art, and all manner of artistically accomplished endeavors. Second, and perhaps most importantly for numismatists, Barber understood the needs of high speed, large production coinage. His designs were always in low relief, and thus, well suited to the Mint's needs to only stamp a planchet once to achieve a full (or at least sharp) strike. This second element also works to the advantage of modern collectors as Barber's coins are more often found in high grades because they were struck in low relief, and were more easily preserved by successive generations of collectors.
This particular coin is an exceptionally well preserved coin that has deep, watery reflectivity in the fields and chalk-white devices that provide a stark cameo contrast on each side. Impeccably preserved, as one would expect from the PR67 grade designation. Census: 5 in 67 Ultra Cameo, 8 finer (3/06).
