1892<$2 1/2> Proof Quarter Eagle--Struck Through--PR64 Heavy Cameo ANACS. The 1892 is a better date within the Liberty quarter eagle series. 105 proofs were struck, in addition to 2,440 business strikes. Both proof and commercial mintages would be exceeded every year thereafter, until the Indian type was introduced in 1908. This undisturbed specimen features frosty devices and darkly mirrored fields. The contrast is formidable, particularly by the standards of 19th century proofs. Striking incompleteness is limited to a few obverse dentils near 7 o'clock, and on the eagle near the base of the shield. The latter area has softer detail because a small amount of foreign matter was imbedded in the recesses of the reverse die. Again, as with several of the coins in the Henderson consignment, this piece is a doubly significant as it is an error struck in gold and it is an error on a proof coin. Undoubtedly, a number of other proof 1892 quarter eagles share the same strike-through; for example, lot 8650 in our January 2005 FUN Signature auction.
From The Henderson Collection of U.S. Gold Errors.
