1892 10C PR67 Ultra Cameo NGC. Mintages of proof Barbe
1892 10C PR67 Ultra Cameo NGC. Mintages of proof Barber coins soared--relatively speaking--from the last year of the Seated Liberty coinage in 1891, a series that must have seemed interminable to collectors of the time. Indeed, many U.S. residents in the mid-19th century lived and died without ever seeing another silver coin design than the Seated Liberty. The first-year 1892 Barber proof coinage of 1,245 pieces was more than double 1891's 600 coins, but enthusiasm for the series was short-lived, if it existed at all. A contemporaneous excerpt from The Numismatist reviewing the new Barber designs reads, in part, "These pieces have, by this time, been in the hands of our readers. The mechanical work is all that could be desired, and it is probable, that owing to the conventional rut in which our Mint authorities seem obliged to keep, that it is the best that could be done,--for after all they are not gotten up for the collector, but for general barter,--but to the numismatist or lover of the beautiful in design and art, they will be but another disappointment, hardly noticable sic now because expected, and we are getting so used to them." The proof mintage plummeted in 1893 to 792 pieces, a near-40% drop.
The present example is an essential type coin, at PR67 Ultra Cameo the only coin so graded at NGC (3/07). Both sides feature deep black-on-silver contrast between the fields and devices, with no hint of toning. A small contact mark is noted on Liberty's cheek.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
