1892 $1 PR67 PCGS. The proof Morgan dollar issue of 1892 has a surprisingly high mintage, 1,245 pieces, that nearly doubles the production for the previous year. In 1893, the mintage fell to 792 pieces, still higher than that of 1891, but a significant decline nonetheless. This is more a criticism of the Barber design than of the Morgan dollar, as collectors ordered large numbers of silver proof sets featuring the new Barber design, but declined to order a similar set for 1893.
This is an attractive proof for the issue, better-defined than most with just a trace of weakness visible at the hair above the ear. The gleaming surfaces remain reflective beneath deep toning, hazy steam-gray in the centers and deeper blue-green and rouge at the periphery. Wonderfully well-preserved, as expected for the grade, and among the finest representatives known. PCGS has certified just two higher-graded examples (6/07).

Coin Engraver: George T.
