1891-S $20 MS63 PCGS. S-mint Type Three twenty dollar
1891-S<$20> MS63 PCGS. S-mint Type Three twenty dollar gold pieces, distinguished by the denomination TWENTY DOLLARS spelled out, appear to represent significant value in today's numismatic marketplace. As a point of comparison, while PCGS has graded more than 107,000 examples of the ubiquitous 1904 issue in MS62 or higher grades, that service has graded 1,971 pieces of the 1891-S in MS62 or higher--the finest a few dozen MS64 examples. That figure is 2% of the total 1904s, and yet the price differential between the two coins is, according to the online PCGS Price Guide respectively, 29%, 272%, and 478% between the two coins in MS62 through MS64 grades. In other words, an MS64 1891-S, if one can be found, retails for only six times that of the 1904 in the same grade, even though more than 300 times as many 1904s exist! In MS63 the 1891-S retails for about four times the 1904's price in the same grade, even though PCGS has graded 71 times more 1904s than 1891-S coins in that grade (3/06)! The current example boasts a bold strike, as is typically found on this issue, lovely orange-gold color, and a minimal number of bagmarks. While the current tsunami of bullion gold prices has not yet swept these scarce coins in its wake, this opportunity will not last forever.

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid. This lot is being auctioned in conjunction with a live floor auction by Heritage Galleries & Auctioneers. All final auction and invoice information will be supplied by Heritage Galleries & Auctioneers, and all other information should be considered preliminary.
