1891$1 MS66 NGC. We have not handled an MS66 1891 dollar since we offered the Mike Casper Collection, and for good reason: there just aren't any high grade examples to offer and the few that do exist are in strong hands. This is one of two NGC MS66s with none finer (1/05). Casper had an MS66 also (a PCGS coin), and there is a single MS67 that has been certified by PCGS. This is all quite curious as the 1891 is a relatively common, high mintage issue that is always available in MS64 condition. However, in Gem condition the availability of coins drops precipitously. This is a well struck example that is brilliant throughout and is covered with thick mint frost, one might almost confuse this with an S-mint dollar it is so heavily frosted. There are no obvious or distracting abrasions on either side, just a few shallow and unobtrusive luster grazes. As a footnote, the MS67 coin mentioned above sold several years ago for $50,000 and the last we heard it resides in the second finest set of Morgan Dollars in existence at this time.
From The Banks Collection. Lot:10347
