1891 James Naismith Signed Football Cabinet Photograph. Naismith's second most important contribution to the world of sport is apparent here as he strikes a scrimmage pose while wearing the earliest prototype of a football helmet. It was actually Naismith's wife who requested such an innovation, lamenting the "cauliflower ears" her husband was developing as a result of his gridiron exploits. Playing the role of quarterback is his friend Harvey Smith, who is also identified in 10/10 black fountain pen writing in Naismith's hand on verso. Writing reads, in full, "James Naismith Center, Harvey Smith Quarter, 1891." This is arguably the finest Naismith autograph offered within this auction, if not the most pristine example in the hobby, bar none. The fantastic sepia cabinet photo bears the mark of a Springfield, Mass. studio at the left border, and remains in remarkable NRMT condition. Dimensions are 5x7". LOA from PSA/DNA.

Shipping: Small Flat (view shipping information)
