1891 - Great broadside showing an early German Fraternal organization founded in Los Angeles in 1875. The linen broadside measures 40.5" x 54" and has 23 original cabinet card photographs, each measuring 4" x 6" and a 4" x 6" replacement. The name of the organization is Gesangs-Sectiondes Turn-Verein`s Germania (Vocal section of the gymnastics club Germania). It was a countrywide organization that began in Germany in 1811.

The Turnverein movement was founded in Germany in 1811 by Friedrich Ludwig Jahn, and soon commanded a sizable following, particularly among socially and politically active student groups. Jahn himself was a high school teacher who advocated physical health as a necessary part of a complete life, best summarized by the slogan that came to represent the Turners: “A Sound Mind in a Sound Body.” The Turnverein movement’s political underpinnings included support for Pan-German national unification and democratic reform, the latter of which was particularly appealing to student adherents of the movement.

Their vocal activism, as well as participation in the failed revolution of 1848, led to repression and exile for many Turnverein supporters, of whom a large percentage emigrated to the United States in the years following the revolution.
