1891-CC $20 AU58 PCGS. The 1891-CC has an unusually low mintage of 5,000 pieces. Among CC-mint double eagles, only the 1870-CC has a lesser production. Bullion was relatively plentiful at Carson City in 1891, since the 1891-CC half eagle and eagle have the highest mintages of their denominations from the legendary Western facility. Since the production of half eagles and eagles required more man-hours to coin than double eagles for a given bullion deposit, perhaps the Mint director simply wished to keep personnel occupied. Another possibility is that the comparatively generous mintage of 1890-CC double eagles was sufficient to satisfy local demand.
This example is well struck aside from the first three obverse stars, which exhibit soft centers. Luster is complete across the reverse, and obverse luster is only slightly muted on the cheek and open field. A few moderate marks are located on the right obverse field near the hair bun, but these are characteristic of briefly circulated double eagles. An opportunity for the determined specialist. Population: 22 in 58, 18 finer (10/06).

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
