<B>1891-CC $20 AU55 NGC.</B></I> The 1891-CC double eagle has a surprisingly low mintage, even by the standards of that Wild West facility. With just 5,000 pieces struck, the 1891-CC had a smaller production run than even the famous 1871-CC, and it has the second-lowest mintage overall, behind only the legendary 1870-CC double eagle.<BR> Yet the issue is more available than the mintage alone would suggest, particularly in finer grades. Garrett and Guth (2006) attribute this to "an unknown number of coins" that went overseas and were later repatriated. Many such coins grade About Uncirculated or low Mint State, and perhaps an overseas hoard is to thank for the existence of this Choice AU representative. The devices are mostly well-defined, though the lower stars of the obverse display softness, a distinctive trait for this issue. The wheat-gold surfaces are modestly worn, yet surprisingly mark-free with slightly reflective luster on the obverse and frosty luster on the reverse.<BR><BR><B>Coin Engraver:</B> James B.
