1891-CC $20 AU55 NGC. Winter 1-A, the only known dies. Judging by original mintage figures, the Carson City Mint seems to have spent the majority of its time for gold delivery in 1891 on the Half Eagle and Eagle at the expense of the Double Eagle. The latter was produced to the extent of just 5,000 coins--the lowest mintage for a CC-mint Double Eagle after that of the 1870-CC. This golden-rose representative retains ample evidence of a modest, yet aesthetically pleasing semi-prooflike finish. We note that this feature is mostly confined to the obverse, the reverse displaying a softly frosted texture. Both sides are a little scuffy from circulation with a mentionable abrasion on the obverse before star 2. Well struck in the centers with some isolated softness of definition around the obverse periphery. Doug Winter and Jim Halperin believe that no more than 200 1891-CC Double Eagles are extant in all grades, with the number of coins at the AU level bracketed between estimates of 70 and 95 pieces. A date that is always in demand among CC-mint specialists. From the Ashland City Collection. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
