1891-CC $20 AU55 NGC. The advanced Carson City collect
1891-CC<$20> AU55 NGC. The advanced Carson City collector will recognize the importance of this opportunity, as Choice AU or finer examples of this date seldom become available. With a mintage of just 5,000 coins, this is the second lowest production issue among all Carson City Mint double eagles! Only the 1870-CC issue [3,789] has a lower mintage. Regardless of perspective, this is a rare issue, although two authors have different opinions of the surviving population. Douglas Winter wrote about the Gold Coins of the Carson City Mint, published in 2001. Winter claimed a total known population of 150 to 200 coins, including 10 to 15 Mint State pieces, and 70 to 95 AU grade coins. Rusty Goe, who penned The Mint on Carson Street, published in 2003, suggested a total population of 270 to 325 coins, with 42 to 50 in Mint State grades. This example has brilliant yellow-gold surfaces with slightly reflective fields. Most design elements are sharply defined, and light wear is evident only on the high points, and primarily just on the obverse. Although a few slight abrasions are evident, none are significant. The Carson City collector, or the double eagle collector, who has been waiting for an attractive example may wish to consider the present specimen.
From The Wyoming Collection.
