1891-CC $10 MS64 NGC. Repunched Mintmark. Winter 3-C. This issue boasts the highest mintage of any Liberty Eagle produced in the Carson City Mint. At least three die marriages were used to strike 103,732 pieces. The present variety, which Winter and Halperin (2001) believe "should sell for a premium," is readily identifiable by repunching on the CC mintmark. The present representative clearly reveals this feature to the right of the lower curve in the second C. Also of note is the diagnostic obverse spine (as produced) from the bottom of Liberty's chin and a peripheral die crack (also as struck) on the same side that joins stars 1-5. While survivors of the '91-CC delivery are generally used for type purposes, few collectors will have the opportunity to acquire one of the Condition Census near-Gems. The roster of known MS64 representatives includes: 1. Ex: A coin graded MS64 by PCGS early in 2000. It is the single finest known example at that grading service (10/02). 2. Ex: Private collection; Doug Winter / Lee Minshull (9/1998). Certified by NGC, as are the following examples. NGC has also yet to certify a single 1891-CC Eagle above the MS64 level (10/02). 3. Ex: Chicago collection; Doug Winter / Lee Minshull (9/1998). 4. Ex: Private collection. 5. Ex: Private collection; possibly from the Norweb II sale (Bowers and Merena, 3/1988), lot 2252. 6. Ex: Heritage Rare Coin Galleries (1998). 7. Ex: Heritage Rare Coin Galleries (1995).We do not know which, if any of these NGC entries represent the pedigree of the Ashland City specimen. This coin is fully lustrous with a richly frosted texture that thins to modest brightness in the fields. Sharply struck throughout with a noteworthy lack of distracting bagmarks. From the Ashland City Collection. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
