1891 Assay Commission Medal. MS64 Uncertified. Julian A
<B>1891 Assay Commission Medal. MS64 Uncertified.</B></I> Julian AC-34, R.5. Copper, 33.7 mm., 328.7 grains. William Windom faces right, his name in the field. Around, THE MINT OF THE UNITED STATES, and below, ANNUAL ASSAY 1891. The reverse motif is an assayer at work, with the legend SCIENTIA CORONAT OPUS, translated to "Knowledge Crowns the Work."<BR> Satiny chestnut-brown surfaces are free of marks on either side. This is an exceptional near-Gem example. Modest strike doubling is evident around the entire legend on the obverse. R.W. Julian discussed the use of the obverse: "As Treasury Secretary Windom died on January 29, 1891, the decision to use this obverse must have been a hasty one; the bust is reduced from the regular Windom medal executed in December 1890."
