1891 50C PR68 Cameo NGC. Ex: P. Kaufman. This year marks the last in which Christian Gobrecht's Seated Liberty appeared on the Half Dollar. Produced since 1839 in six major varieties, the design yielded to Charles Barber's Liberty Head in 1892. The year 1891 saw the production of 200,000 business strike Seated Halves and 600 proofs. There is not a single business strike certified finer than MS67 at NGC or PCGS, and just three specimen strikings reside at the PR68 level (10/02). The present example is the only one of the latter coins with a Cameo designation, and it is a truly remarkable representative. Both sides are essentially untoned with a bright, silver-white sheen. The strike is needle sharp throughout, and the surfaces are pristine from rim to rim. The richly frosted devices are set against a backdrop of shimmering reflectivity in the fields. A tiny lintmark (as struck) in the left reverse field below the scroll upon which the motto IN GOD WE TRUST is inscribed should prove useful for pedigree purposes. A coin for the date collector who will accept nothing but the best in technical and aesthetic quality for their collection. From the Philip Kaufman Collection.
