1891 25C Seated Liberty Quarter--Struck 40% Off Center
1891 25C Seated Liberty Quarter--Struck 40% Off Center--AU58 PCGS. Struck off-center at 12 o'clock with the date almost exactly at the center of this piece. The surfaces are fully lustrous with only a trace of wear on the high points.
This is probably a product of the Philadelphia Mint, although giving consideration to the possibility of a branch mint piece adds to the appeal of this important error. Both sides have clearly visible die cracks that should make identification possible, and provide some numismatist with an enjoyable pursuit. Although clash marks can and do occur at all mints, this piece has identical clash marks to an 1891-O quarter that we sold in our June 2005 New York Signature sale, lot 5520.
The obverse has a fine die crack through the base of the date and another crack that connects the centers of stars 1, 2, and 3. A clash mark forms an arc between the rock and the date. The reverse has a clash mark forming a straight line through the scroll, passing below WE and left and right over OD and TR. A prominent die crack connects the upper right corner of the scroll to the eagle's wing below. Slight doubling appears on the right side of a few vertical stripes in the shield on the reverse. It would certainly be fun for the new owner to identify this as a product of either the New Orleans or San Francisco Mints.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
