1891 $20 Liberty NGC PF61 UC
1891 $20 Liberty. NGC graded PF61 UC. Sleek warm yellow gold highlights adorn the frosty central motifs of this splendid rarity. The fields are smooth though not deeply mirrored and faint bursts of iridescence sparkle on both sides. Just 52 Proofs of the 1887 double eagle were struck, and probably fewer than 20 to 30 of those can be accounted for today, including those permanently impounded in museum holdings. 1891 is a rare date as well in circulation strikes, with production under fourteen hundred! An undeniably elusive rarity, therefore, and a date for which few are ever offered. This has scattered light contact marks and a short hairline scratch from the point of the coronet to the rim but all in all is very acceptable for its type and date. NGC holder #2032672-014.
