1891 $20 AU58 PCGS. The 1891 was underappreciated by numismatists as a rare issue in the Liberty Head double eagle series, until recently; yet probably fewer than 100 pieces survive from a low mintage of 1,390 business strikes. This near-Mint example is well struck with prooflike fields and rich reddish-gold and green coloration. Little or no highpoint wear exists on either side, but numerous wispy marks are noted in the fields. Similar to the NGC AU58 Prooflike that sold for $69,000 in our 2006 August Denver Signature. In our experience, it is very difficult to locate an 1891 in AU, and a mere four pieces have been certified in Mint State by the two major services: three by NGC and one at PCGS. The highest-graded of these is an MS62, at NGC. Population: 9 in 58, 1 finer (11/06).

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
