An extremely interesting letter written and signed in the name of Charles Stewart Parnell by a member of staff. Headed 'Private and Confidential' and sent from Morrison's Hotel Dublin stating that "in view of the proposed change in directorate expected of the Freeman's Journal... steps should be taken to promote an independent national daily paper... a meeting of our leading friends should be held here on Thursday next." With original envelope addressed to Mr. M. DonnellyAt the start of the Parnell split in the I.P.P., the Freeman's Journal came out strongly in favour of Parnell. However the paper defected to the anti-Parnellites and in doing so installed a new board, referred to in this letter. An interesting piece of Parliamentary Party history written at a time when Parnell found himself running out of friends and just a few months before his death.
