1891 $10 PR65 Ultra Cameo NGC. Present controversies about the numerous Mint products scheduled for 2007 (and the five-figure sums required to acquire one of everything) bring to mind the difficulties collectors faced in earlier years. While the minor proofs of the 19th century usually had mintages at least in the hundreds, if not the thousands, far fewer numismatists had the financial wherewithal to put away examples of the gold proofs of the era. Often forgotten is the substantial financial cost, which could easily reach the thousands of dollars as reckoned in modern currency. The 48 proofs of this issue almost all display cameo contrast, according to Garrett and Guth, but anything stronger is difficult to come by. In the NGC Census, 17 Cameo pieces are listed, along with five Ultra Cameo coins, and only one specimen received neither designation. In addition, the vast majority of examples grade Choice, with Gem examples far more elusive.
Interestingly, this is the first Ultra Cameo example of this issue ever offered by Heritage, and as far as starts go, it is difficult to do better. The deeply reflective mirrors are essentially free of haze, and the richly frosted devices engender stunning black-and-gold contrast. A tiny contact mark below the eagle's beak is a minimal distraction at worst. The minor hairlines so often found on 19th century proof gold are absent on this piece, and a quick look is sufficient to assure any viewer of the quality of this specimen, though anyone with any interest in this lot will want to take more than a glance. Census: 2 in 65 Ultra Cameo, 1 finer (11/06).

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
