1890-S S$1 MS66 PCGS. While a decent percentage of the 8.2 million Silver Dollars produced in the San Francisco Mint in 1890 entered circulation in the 19th century, many more examples were saved in Mint State and distributed at later dates. As a result, this issue is relatively easy to obtain in virtually all grades. Unfortunately for high quality date collectors, MS66 is not one of them. This is one of the most beautiful and technically sound '90-S Dollars that we have ever offered. Ice-white in sheen, the richly frosted surfaces are devoid of even the lightest hint of toning. The obviously powerful impression has resulted in sharp, if not full definition in all areas. One or two wispy abrasions in the reverse field to the left of the eagle are noted, but, with an otherwise smooth sheen and a particularly placid cheek on Liberty's portrait, this coin is solidly graded as a premium quality Gem. It is perhaps interesting to note that our April 2002 sale of the Morris Silverman Collection, a collection that focused on high grade as well as absolute rarity, did not include an 1890-S Morgan.
