1890<S$1> PR67 Cameo PCGS. From the period of 1879 to 1904, the 590 coin production of 1890 Proof Morgan Silver Dollars was the lowest of any issue. These coins were struck in the months of March, June, and December. In the official Red Book of Morgan Silver Dollars, numismatic authority Q. David Bowers discussed the key to collecting this issue: "Nearly all [business strikes] are lightly or even poorly struck and with dull, unattractive luster. Some show graininess and metal flow. If you want a nice one, buy a Proof!" The typical Proof example has medium to low cameo contrast, if any, according to Bowers, although a decade earlier the same author stated "most Proofs have very attractive cameo contrast." Many of these were sharply struck, although some others were noticeably flat at the centers. This amazing Superb Gem Cameo Proof defies all of the logic in the above comments. It is a splendid cameo example with deeply mirrored fields. The strike is sharp with both sides almost completely detailed. Both sides are fully brilliant without any toning.
From The JFS Collection, Part Three.
