1890 S$1 MS65 NGC. Bowers, in his book Silver Do
1890<S$1> MS65 NGC. Bowers, in his book Silver Dollars and Trade Dollars of the United States, writes that 1890 dollars, despite a mintage of nearly 17 million pieces, are surprisingly rare in MS65 and higher grades, where he estimates that only 400 to 800 exist. The current specimen, featuring bright, fully lustrous surfaces, is essentially white, save for a wispy gold toning streak on Liberty's neck. The design elements are much better impressed than is usually the case for this issue, where the dies were spaced too far apart and /or worn beyond their normal useful life. Each side of this attractive coin is well preserved, displaying just a few unobtrusive contact marks that are not at all bothersome. NGC has certified only two pieces finer (4/05).
