1890 Proof Set PR64 to PR66 NGC
1890 Proof Set PR64 to PR66 NGC. Comprises six coins from the cent through silver dollar. The minor proof sets were made to the extent of 2,740 pieces, and the silver proof sets, 590 coins:

Cent PR65 Red and Brown. A sharply struck brick-red example, mellowing to magenta on much of the reverse and the obverse highpoints. A couple of faint water spots appear in the toning under a loupe, but still attractive.

Nickel PR65. A sharp, lovely, lightly toned Gem with tinges of yellow, carmine, and ice-blue on both sides. The usual strike weakness shows on the lower left ear of corn.

Dime PR64. Olive-gray and iridescent amber-gold toning on each side subdues the luster somewhat, but there is still moderate reflectivity, particularly on the reverse.

Quarter PR65. Business strikes saw a low mintage of 80,000 coins. This proof offers iridescent steel-blue, golden-red, and lilac toning with a silver area remaining on the obverse. A moderately reflective piece with some cameo contrast, although unrecognized.

Half Dollar PR66. A virtual match for the quarter, with silver centers on both sides and iridescent steel-blue and lilac patina. A sharply struck and virtually unmarked example of this low-mintage issue.

Morgan Dollar PR65. Intense olive-gold and aqua tones grace each side, with moderately reflective surfaces remaining underneath the deep color. A sharp, attractive, and problem-free example that appears conservatively graded.

Coin Engraver: James B.
