<B>1890-CC $1 Tail Bar MS64 Deep Mirror Prooflike PCGS.</B></I> VAM-4. Top 100 Variety. Identified by a spectacular die gouge that runs from the juncture of the arrow feathers and the eagle's tailfeathers down to the wreath. In their <I>The Top 100 Morgan Dollar Varieties: The VAM Keys</B></I>, Michael Fey and Jeff Oxman say of this variety: "Heavily promoted as a major rarity, the VAM-4 is actually more common than most collector's realize." While some numismatists may debate the authors' contention about the variety's rarity level, Deep Mirror Prooflike examples, like the near-Gem specimen in this lot, are anything but common. Indeed, when Fey and Oxman wrote their booklet (1996), they indicated that Deep Mirror Prooflike specimens were unknown!<BR> An attentive strike brings out sharp definition on the design elements, including the hair at Liberty's ear and the eagle's breast feathers. The only hint of patina are some milky freckles visible under magnification. A few minor marks on each side preclude full Gem status.
