The Adams Express Company was one of the first carrier companies in the U.S. to deliver to individuals with the use of the railroad. Started by Vermont native Alvin Adams in 1840, the company proved to be extremely successful. In 1854 Adams merged with three other express carriers to become the Adams Express Company. The company is still in existence today acting as a wealthy investment trust and is one of the oldest companies listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
