1890 50C PR66 Deep Cameo PCGS. The silver lobby and the Bland-Allison Act of 1878 explain several mysteries in late 19th century numismatics. The Act required the government to purchase between 2 and 4 million ounces of newly coined silver each month. What this translated into is enormous mintages for silver dollars, as a silver dollar was heavier than two halves, four quarters, or 10 dimes. As a result, mintages for lower denomination silver coins from 1878 through 1890 were remarkably low for the most part. The year 1890 was the final year for lower production numbers for half dollars. Still, only 12,000 circulation strikes were produced, plus 590 proofs. This is an outstanding Deep Cameo proof. The fields are deeply reflective and all the devices on each side show thick mint frost. The result is a profound white-on-black cameo effect. Population: 1 in 66, 1 finer (8/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
